Background
If you are reading this, you are bravely considering whether to endeavor on the journey into a therapeutic process, which I applaud you for. This is a professional summary of who I am as a Clinical Psychologist, my qualifications and the modalities through which I work. This should act as a small guide regarding whether you choose to contact me to pursue psychotherapy, for yourself or a loved one.
I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 2021; however, I have been actively working within the mental health care industry for just over eleven years. My roles and involvement have shifted as I became more trained and gained further qualifications. Alongside my standing as a Clinical Psychologist, I am also a Registered Counsellor (Health Professions Council of South Africa - HPCSA - certified). I completed my Masters Degree, education and training as a Clinical Psychologist through North West University (cum laude) and my prior education and training as a Registered Counsellor through The Midrand Graduate Institute (cum laude). I am currently a PhD scholar with Rhodes University.
I have worked in diverse settings, both locally in South Africa as well as overseas in Europe. My primary training has taken place within the public health care sector in Psychiatric Hospitals, General Hospitals and Correctional Services. My Internship as a Clinical Psychologist was completed with the South African National Defense Force at 2 Military Hospital and my Community Service was completed with Correctional Services at Pollsmoor Prison. Alongside the Military and Correctional Services, I have also worked under the Department of Health and under the Department of Education. My experiences in each environment have equipped me to treat a broad range of emotional and mental challenges, with a diverse population of individuals, groups and families.
Most importantly, often people assume that to see a Clinical Psychologist or engage in psychotherapy one is “required” to be experiencing mental illness. I work with people who fall anywhere on the spectrum from highly functioning to struggling with daily functioning. Therapy is for anyone and everyone.
Therapeutic Style
My style as a therapist is largely Integrative. As an Integrative Psychologist, I strive to utilise the most appropriate therapeutic techniques and styles to suit how each unique individual presents. I strongly resist forcing the individuals, groups and families I work with into a specific therapeutic “box”, and prefer to co-create our therapeutic space as a team. That being said, I am informed by Psychodynamic Theory - Jungian Analysis sits at the heart of my practice, incorporating Object Relations Theory and Attachment Theory. Developmental Theory also underpins much of my work, as it assists in contextualizing one’s stage of life across one’s lifespan in relation to where one has come from and where one is going. When appropriate, I utilise Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Gestalt Therapy. I incorporate creative elements into my therapeutic environment such as Play, Music and Art (with all age groups!) should one be willing and open.
Alongside what I have described as my therapeutic stance, as a Psychologist I aim to create a warm, welcoming and safe space for you. Ethical standards for care and treatment are of the utmost importance to me, and you will experience such.
